Master Gardeners of Greater Kansas City educate the public on gardening topics, answer gardening questions, and are proud contributors in their community.  Some of the programs Master Gardeners of Greater Kansas City are involved in are Hotline, Speakers Bureau, Garden Tour, Demonstration garden plots, Special Events, and Community Projects, which include: Ronald McDonald House, Watkins Woolen Mill historic heirloom garden, Martha LaFitte Thompson Nature Sanctuary, Harvesters, and much, much more.   Application for the next class is due on June 9.  Additional Information.

World Heritage Sites in Croatia

Hosted by the Kansas City Public Library, World Heritage Sites in Croatia is a 50-item exhibit depicting architectural history and natural landscapes of Croatia, commissioned by the republic's Ministry of Culture.  Commemorates the 25th anniversary of the inclusion of Croatian cultural landmarks on the prestigious UNESCO World Heritage list.  Sites depicted in the exhibit include: the late medieval planned town of Dubrovnik, "the pearl of the Adriatic" restored with United Nations support after a siege in 1991; the coastal town of Split with a Roman imperial palace at its center; and landscapes from Plitvice Lakes National Park.

Unseen, Unforgotten: Alabama Civil Rights Pictorial Debut

Black and white images, never before released to the public, endure as reminders of Alabama's not-so-distant past: Freedom Riders who defied segregation huddling at a Birmingham bus station after a mob attack; the first black graduate of the University of Alabama walking in solitude across campus on her first day of classes; National Guard troops with unsheathed bayonets in rural Sumter County; and much more.  9:00 am to 5:00 pm daily; admission is free.

The Photographer's Eye: Kansas City through the lens of Warner Studio
As a commercial photographer living and working in Kansas City in the 1950's, Warner Untersee made a living promoting "The American Dream."  Without intending it, Untersee also became a visual anthropologist.  His work is an invaluable record of mid-20th century American life and culture, providing historical perspective on sociology, architecture, urban planning, sports, leisure, fashion and pop culture in Kansas City.  Regular museum admission and hours.

Made in Johnson County

Locally made products and inventions are the subject of the Johnson County Museum's latest exhibit, Made in Johnson County.  Exhibit presents the major enterprises in Johnson County from the 1850s to the modern day and the major technological changes which sparked greater diversification in our local business community.  Regular museum hours; admission is free.

Loula Long Combs and her Family's Impact on Kansas City

Loula Long Combs, daughter of Kansas City lumber baron R.A. Long, may have been best known as a horsewoman, but it was her and her families extraordinary generosity that left a legend.  In some ways, the Longs' generosity was the undoing of the family fortune, but no one can fault their humanitarian and compassionate spirit.  Join Bonnie Hansen, a fashion historian, speaker, and costumer to the motion picture industry, in an engaging presentation on the Long family contribution to Kansas City and the United States.  Co-sponsored by the Jackson County Historical Society and the Independence, MO Parks and Recreation Department.  Admission is free.  Participants invited to bring a sack lunch; beverages are provided.

African American Heritage Workshop

The Black Archives of the St. Joseph Museums, Inc., will host an African American Heritage workshop in honor of Black History Month for students in the 4th, 5th, and 6th grades.  Workshop activities will include weaving, storytelling, constructing a quilt map of Africa, tasting indigenous foods, and a tour of the Black Archives collection.   Alonzo Weston, a columnist for the St. Joseph News-Press, will be a special guest.  The workshop will be held at the Black Archives, 3406 Frederick Avenue.  The cost is $5 per student.  Space is limited and paid reservations are required.  The deadline for making reservations is February 10.  Please call 816-232-8471 for more information or to make a reservation. Veterans History Project Celebration

Join us in recognizing 70 volunteers who have helped the Jackson County Historical Society - an archive partner for the Library of Congress American Folklife Center's Veterans History Project - gather more than 1,000 oral history interviews of local veterans and civilians! Their stories are preserved and made available in the Society's Archives and Research Library. After a reception, program and awards presentation, guests are invited to view the Veterans Hall, featuring displays and kiosks where visitors may view a growing selection of recorded oral history interviews.
