From Kansas City to Liberia: Leon and Orchid Jordan

Leon Jordan, the first African American lieutenant in the Kansas City Police Department, accepted an invitation in 1947 from the government of Liberia to establish a professional 450-man police force there.  Accompanied by his wife Orchid, his assignment spanned five years.  The Jordans' activities and daily life in Liberia are well documented in numerous photographs, in part because Orchid set up the photography section within the new department.  Later in his career, Jordan helped found Freedom, Inc. and served as a state representative until his murder in 1970; his wife held that legislative seat for the next 16 years.  Robert Farnsworth, a retired professor of English from UMKC, is currently researching a biography on Leon Jordan and will lead this illustrated discussion.
