Library director Crosby Kemper III will discuss the legacy of Long as a
Kansas City lumber baron and his civic contributions to the city including
his efforts in building Liberty Memorial as well as the awe-inspiring
Independence Boulevard Christian Church. The Community Curator Lecture
Series invites historians, history educators and noteworthy Kansas Citians
to share their perspectives on artifacts of their choice from the Museum

Travel to the Land of the Pharaohs by Dr. Jimmy Albright, MWSU
Dr. Jimmy Albright presents images of some the major sites in Egypt
including a mummified hand with part of the painted fabric in which the
mummy was wrapped, an ancient seated bronze statue of the god Osiris
pictured as a pharaoh on a throne, replicas of Egyptian artifacts, and
samples of the earliest paper (papyrus) invented by the Egyptians. Dr.
Albright will also provide information about an upcoming trip to Egypt
that he will be hosting in October of 2010.

Shooting Stars: The Celebrity Photography of Orval Hixon
Orval Hixon transformed the field of portrait photography in Kansas City
and the surrounding region during a career that spanned over seven decades.
David Shields, professor of English at the University of South Carolina
and author of The Magic Mirror: Photography & American Silent Cinema,
discusses Hixon’s work, and its relationship to early 20th century theater
and film. This presentation marks the grand opening of the Library’s Orval
Hixon Gallery, which exhibits digital prints produced from Hixon’s
original glass negatives that were donated by James Finley, owner of the
Sundance Photo Gallery in Weston. Free Event

Kansas Day Activities
Celebrate the state's 149th birthday. Topeka researcher Barbara LeClair
will show visitors how to learn more about their American Indian
ancestors, the Mission's library will be open, and information on today's
