Treasures from the Collections - 2010

Museum collections are the treasures that tell of family, community, and business. With that in mind, the museum staff will give visitors a close up view of the variety of items in their collection during this special event. This two-part series will feature a different selection of fascinating artifacts each evening. For the 2010 programs each full-time staff person has chosen an item from the collection to be part of the series. The historical significance of the item, how it is cared for, why they choose to feature it, and the story of how that particular piece became a part of the collection will be shared by individual staff members. Author presentation: Deaths on Pleasant Street: The Ghastly Enigma of Colonel Swope and Doctor Hyde

Giles Fowler discusses his book on the 1909 murder case surrounding the wealthy Swope family of Independence, Missouri. The case gripped newspaper readers throughout the nation. Deaths on Pleasant Street gathers the facts behind the suspicious fates of three Swope family members: the eccentric Colonel, a wealthy benefactor of Kansas City; his affable cousin; and a young nephew and heir. The mystery pits the Swope matriarch against her disfavored son-in-law, Dr. Bennett Clark Hyde.

Linda Maria Gigante: Resurrecting Dead Romans

Linda Maria Gigante presents Resurrecting Dead Romans: Reconstructing the Lives of Slaves and Freedmen from Their Tombs and Epitaphs. Gigante will discuss the role slaves played in Roman culture and what close examination of their tombs and epitaphs reveals about their lives. She will focus on a collection of 1st and 2nd century CE epitaphs that were removed from non-elite tombs in Rome in the late 19th century and have, since 1929, been in the Speed Art Museum in Louisville, Kentucky.

Harzfeld’s: A Brief History of Petticoat Lane

Authors, Joe and Michele Boeckholt trace Harzfeld’s fashions with archival photographs and memorabilia. In 1891, Siegmund Harzfeld and the Parisian Cloak Company introduced a new era of commerce and fashion to the residents of Kansas City. The ready-to-wear movement arrived at his flagship Harzfeld’s location along Petticoat Lane, which later expanded its reach through a regional network of satellite stores.

Missouri Barn Dinner Series: Taste of Ireland at Powell Gardens

The Gardens’ own Chef Nick Jonjevic begins a series of themed dinners paired with wine or other spirits hand-selected to complement creative multiple courses. Chef Nick, a graduate of the Culinary Institute of America, will use foods fresh from the Gardens whenever possible. Each dinner will be hosted by a senior member of the Powell Gardens’ staff and will include tasting notes.
