The school opened in 1835, remained open during the Civil War and continued to operate as a school until 1946. Today, children can take a field trip back in time and experience school-life in 1889.   Mt. Gilead church was formed in 1830. Members held services in their homes until a church was built in 1844. It burned in 1862. The brick building that stands today was erected in 1873. It still contains all of its original furnishings and is available for weddings and other special events.

Pharis Farm is located 5 miles East of Liberty, Missouri. The house, completed in 1859 by Daniel Bell, was purchased in 1927 by Donald Pharis, as well as the surrounding 160 acres. The museum is named for its founder George Glore, who spent most of his 41-year career with the Missouri Department of Mental Health. The notorious outlaw Jesse James was shot and killed in this house on April 3, 1882. He was killed by Bob Ford, a member of the James gang, to collect a $10,000 reward offered by Gov. Tom Crittenden.
