The mission of the Ray County
Historical Society is "to collect, preserve and present the history
and culture of the people of Ray County, Missouri and the families who
pioneered the area to make it the county it is today."
The Ray County Museum has accomplished much of that mission with
exhibits on three floors chronicling the history of that County.
The museum is in a Georgian brick building originally built in 1910 as
a county Poor Farm and later used as a nursing home. The museum was
established in 1973 and provides guests with information housed in 54
rooms, a barn and a potters' field.
The museum also houses a genealogy and research library. Rooms are
dedicated to themes including our nation's wars, children's history,
African American history, law enforcement, school life, religious
life, politics, music and much more - all taken from local Ray County
history.
The museum sits on 15 acres with beautiful grounds for families and
events. Inside, a tea room in the formal parlor can be reserved for
private parties. Additional information can be found at their
web site.
