The always popular “Voices of the Past” interpretive tours of Mount Mora Cemetery will take place on October 19 and 20, 2017.  With beautiful architecture as a backdrop, visitors will hear from “residents” of the cemetery as well as “guests” as they take a walk along a lane in the "prettiest City of the Dead.”  Along the way, they will meet legendary former citizens who step out of the shadows to share new stories, many obscured by the passage of time. This year, the stories of Rich Man, Poor Man, Beggar Man, Thief, Doctor, Lawyer, Merchant, Chief will be shared by the living history characters.

“Voices of the Past” 2017 will treat cemetery visitors to a variety of surprises with humorous stories and tales of adventure, triumph, and tragedy.  Participants will start their tour at the 1879 Wyeth-Tootle Mansion, 1100 Charles Street.  Their visit to the Mansion will include traditional fall treats and a visit from the first living history character of the evening.  Guests will then be swept away to Mount Mora Cemetery to meander along fire-lit Mausoleum Row, stopping to hear the story of a wealthy man, a poor man, several types of businessmen, a doctor, a chief, and a thief.

“The tours are meant to educate about the fascinating history of St. Joseph and the people who built the city and saw so much change in their lifetimes.  What some of them experienced was so long ago, and yet it’s still so easy for us to relate to,” said Suzanne Lehr, Research Associate of the St. Joseph Museums.  “Mount Mora Cemetery is truly a historical and architectural treasure everyone can appreciate.”

Proceeds from “Voices of the Past” benefit the Mount Mora Restoration and Preservation Association and the educational programming at the St. Joseph Museums.  Tickets for the tours must be purchased in advance.

“Voices of the Past” will be held Thursday, October 19 and Friday, October 20.  Tour participants must be 14 years of age or older.  Tours begin at the Wyeth-Tootle Mansion, 1100 Charles Street, St. Joseph, Missouri, at 6 and 7 p.m. on Thursday, October 19.  Tours are available at 6, 7, and 8 p.m. on Friday, October 20.  Tickets are $22 ($20 for Members of the St. Joseph Museum and Mount Mora Cemetery Association.)  Space is limited.  Tickets must be purchased in advance and are available at the St. Joseph Museum, 3406 Frederick Avenue, or by calling 800-530-8866.  For information on this and other St. Joseph Museums events, visit stjosephmuseum.org/events.
