Drawing from period maps in at the Library of Congress and other repositories, the book examines the critical role that maps played in Jefferson’s vision of a formidable republic and challenges the general belief that the Corps of Discovery was heading into uncharted territory as they journeyed west from St. Louis, Missouri, to the Pacific. The maps of the day indicate otherwise.
