Though celebrated in local communities as early as 1866 to honor Civil War dead, in 1868 a national ceremony was held at Arlington National Cemetery. Known as Decoration Day until after World War One, the holiday is now often called Memorial Day and is observed on the last Monday in May to honor all those who have died in  American wars.
